She was the heir of ash and fire, and she would bow to no one.

Celaena Sardothien has survived deadly contests and shattering heartbreak—but at an unspeakable cost. Now she must travel to a new land to confront her darkest truth…a truth about her heritage that could change her life—and her future—forever.

Meanwhile, brutal and monstrous forces are gathering on the horizon, intent on enslaving her world. To defeat them, Celaena must find the strength to not only fight her inner demons but to battle the evil that is about to be unleashed.

Review:

Celaena has survived so much heartbreak.  Her world has been tipped and turned inside out many times in her short life.  So, this errand for the king shouldn’t be much different.  She must seek out her aunt, Queen Maeve of the Fae.  It doesn’t take long for the Fae to seek her out and bring her to Maeve.  Upon meeting her they strike a bargain.  Celaena must find her magic and then she will get the answers that she seeks from Maeve.  While Celaena is training with a Fae prince, Choal and her cousin, Aedion, strike many deals for information.  With the information they glean they are in peril constantly.  While Choal and Aedion are working with rebels, Dorian is learning to control his still new powers.   It seems that all in this world are facing dangers untold and as the King uses more of his power it is only encouraging those in danger to risk more.  Will Celaena finally rise up to claim what is hers?  Will Choal finally choose a side?  Will Dorian learn control and use the power that is so volatile?  All will be answered even if those answers cause more pain.

I have total girl crush on Celaena.  She has grown to be one of my favorite heroines.  She is fearless, powerful and passionate in all she does.  I think this book illustrates that more than anything.  She must face her past horrors and through that she becomes who she must be.  It isn’t just Celaena who really develops in this book.  Choal and Dorian really come into their own.  I’ve always felt Choal was torn on what is right and what is loyal.  He finally chooses and when he does it is in a dramatic way.  A way that you don’t really expect from Choal.  We also get to know Aedion, Celaena’s cousin.  He is everything you would think Celaena’s cousin would be.  Arrogant, fearless and loyal even though many don’t know that he is.  Overall, this book really propelled the story.  It was hard for me to put it down.  I tried really hard to read this slow knowing that the next book isn’t out til September but I couldn’t help it.  These books draw me and never let me go.  I am such a Sarah Maas fan now that I am recommending this series to all who ask.  I hope if you haven’t picked up the first one yet that you are definitely running out and picking it up to start ASAP.

From the throne of glass rules a king with a fist of iron and a soul as black as pitch. Assassin Celaena Sardothien won a brutal contest to become his Champion. Yet Celaena is far from loyal to the crown. She hides her secret vigilantly; she knows that the man she serves is bent on evil.

Keeping up the deadly charade becomes increasingly difficult when Celaena realizes she is not the only one seeking justice. As she tries to untangle the mysteries buried deep within the glass castle, her closest relationships suffer. It seems no one is above questioning her allegiances—not the Crown Prince Dorian; not Chaol, the Captain of the Guard; not even her best friend, Nehemia, a foreign princess with a rebel heart.

Then one terrible night, the secrets they have all been keeping lead to an unspeakable tragedy. As Celaena’s world shatters, she will be forced to give up the very thing most precious to her and decide once and for all where her true loyalties lie… and whom she is ultimately willing to fight for.

Review:

Leaving off from Celaena’s win, Crown of Midnight drives you into Celaena’s new job as Champion.  Back to being a fearless killer Celaena does what she must in hopes of possibly winning her freedom.  What she doesn’t anticipate is how things are different now from a year before.  Though she struggles with her new moral compass she must put on an act that no one can discover.  She can’t confide in the Crown Prince, the Captain of the Guard or even her best friend a foreign princess.  As she gets further into her secrets and intrigue she can’t help but to begin to trust those around her.  That is until a tragic night that turns her world upside down and shreds her to pieces.  Calaena will be changed forever from that night.  Nothing and no one will ever be the same and with that secrets will come to light that are dangerous to all who know them.

This series has gotten me hook, line and sinker.  It has taken all of my will not to sit down and read this entire series.  I have been a good girl and am trying to spread it out.  That being said, Crown of Midnight is one of the best second books in a series I have read. Celaena’s story continues to be spellbinding and page turning.  The suspense, intrigue and romance all flow seamlessly and naturally.  I love all of the new things we discover in this book.  This book made me realize how big this story is going to get.  The emotions are so raw with this story.  Its terribly difficult for me to keep this review spoiler free.  So, I will just tell you if you haven’t started this series after my two reviews then you need to pick it up now.  I guarantee you won’t regret it.
