Review: Heartborn by Terry Maggert

Happy Monday!  Today I bring to you a wonderful fantasy book.  Terry Maggert does a phenomenal job of creating a world full of angels and humans.  It is both inventive and entertaining.  For my full review keep reading after the book blurb.  Have a wonderful week ahead.

Her guardian angel was pushed.

Keiron was never meant to be anything other than a hero. Born high above in a place of war and deception, he is Heartborn, a being of purity and goodness in a place where violence and deceit are just around every corner.

His disappearance will spark a war he cannot see, for Keiron has pierced the light of days to save a girl he has never met, for reasons he cannot understand. Livvy Foster is seventeen, brave, and broken. With half a heart, she bears the scars of a lifetime of pain and little hope of survival.

Until Keiron arrives.

In the middle of a brewing war and Livvy’s failing heart, Keiron will risk everything for Livvy, because a Heartborn’s life can only end in one way: Sacrifice.

Fall with Livvy and Keiron as they seek the truth about her heart, and his power, and what it means to love someone who will give their very life to save you.

Keiron was born to be special.  Livvy was born with half a heart.  Keiron’s life has led up to his fall to help Livvy.  Livvy was born to never survive, but it is her survival that will allow Keiron’s people to live.  Together they will find something fleeting and special.  Will the two of them be able to change Keiron’s world while saving Livvy’s life?

This was an incredibly interesting and entertaining story.  I loved the flow of the story.  It may flip from Earth to Sliver quite a bit but it is quite intrigal to the tale.  Keiron and Livvy’s portions are so sweet and you will feel every emotion that passes between the two of them.  The intrigue in Sliver keeps you on your toes until the very last moment.  Between the story in Sliver and the one on Earth you will learn with it truly means to love and give someone your heart.  I truly fell in love with this story and its characters. I hope we get to see more of Livvy and the people in Sliver.

Review: The Angel Killer (The Watcher Saga #2) by Lisa Voisin

Today, I get to bring to you the wonderful second book in the Watcher Saga by Lisa Voisin.  The Angel Killer takes place only a few months after the first book.  Mia finds her friends have now become targets of the demons and fallen angels.  Mia and Michael must figure out why attacks have increased and how they can stop this before everyone they care about is hurt.  For my full review keep reading after the book blurb.  Hope your weekend is going great!

51lJai+kZ1L._AC_US160_Book Blurb:

Now that she’s found him again, all Mia Crawford wants is some downtime with her fallen angel boyfriend, Michael. But the call of duty keeps him away—from school and from her—with more demons to smite than ever.

When Michael is mortally wounded by a cursed sword, Mia must perform an ancient blood ritual to save him. But the spell exacts a price. Haunted by visions of war, torture, and despair, Mia discovers the world is in more danger than she ever imagined. Behind the scenes, an evil adversary pulls all the strings.

After redemption, there’s Hell to pay.

Though her boyfriend, Michael, is an angel, Mia thinks their tough times have passed and they can now begin a normal boyfriend/girlfriend relationship.  But, when Mia’s friends start being attacked and Michael is forced to be away more often then he is with Mia she realizes something very strong is coming.  The angels are on alert and are worried once Michael is injured by a weapon designed to kill angels.  Can they find that weapon before more angels and humans are hurt?  Will Michael and Mia’s love protect them or only doom them?

This book was literally unputdownable.  I loved how this story propelled so naturally.  Michael and Mia’s characters grew in depth as did the story.  This part in the saga really amped up the drama and suspense.  Lisa Voisin has really raised the bar for this series.  Though we are left with a cliffhanger and loss at the end the reader will find themselves anxiously awaiting the next book to find out if Michael, Mia and the angels will survive with their souls intact.  Overall, this series is a unique and exciting addition to the YA genre.  With Lisa Voisin at the helm, the sky is the limit for this world and its characters.

Review: Sweet Reckoning (The Sweet Triolgy #3) by Wendy Higgins

Happy Wednesday!  Today I am bringing to you the last in The Sweet Trilogy, Sweet Reckoning.  We will finally get to see what happens to the allied Nephilim.  When the Dukes really decide that Anna is a threat and her father is possibly a traitor then all stops are pulled and they throw many Nephilim her way to try to discover her secrets.  For my full review keep reading after the book blurb.

It’s time.

Evil is running rampant and sweet Anna Whitt is its target. Nobody knows when or how the Dukes will strike, but Anna and her Nephilim allies will do anything necessary to rid the earth of the demons and their oppressive ways.

The stakes are higher than ever, and Anna is determined that the love she feels will be her strength, not a liability. But trying to protect the ones she loves while running for her life and battling demonic forces proves to be perilous—especially as faces are changing and trust is fleeting. When the Duke of Lust sends Anna’s great love, Kaidan Rowe, to work against her, Anna must decide how much she’s prepared to risk.

In the most sensual and fast-paced installment yet, Sweet Reckoning brings all the beloved Neph together one last time to fight for their freedom.

Its time for the end.  It will either be Anna and her Nephilim allies or the Dukes.  Sides will be chosen and choices will be made.  The Dukes will send out the worst of the Nephilim to hurt Anna.  The only thing saving the others are that their focus is strictly on Anna and her father.  Soon, even Kaiden, is forced to work against her to continue the ruse that they have been using.  In the end some hearts will be broken and decisions that will change everything will be made.  It is the time a reckoning.  Which side will win?

This is the ultimate ending to this phenomenal series.  I had tears and cheers.  Characters you fall in love with will fall and you find your self crying out Why!  All of that aside, those are why this is one of the best endings of a series.  It wraps up what needed to be wrapped up along with some twists and turns that you don’t expect.  With the happiness of Anna and Kaiden comes sadness with other characters.  The world that Wendy Higgins created was one that I was truly sad to leave.  I wanted to know more about other characters and more about what happens next.  But, with all good series’ you will always be left that way.  I didn’t want to let go of Anna and Kaiden but in the end my heart was so full of them that it felt good to see the ending/beginning of their story.  All around this was a phenomenal book and story.  If my other two reviews haven’t encouraged you to snap this up then I hope this one has convinced you.  You are truly missing out not stepping into this world.

Review: Sweet Peril (The Sweet Trilogy #2) by Wendy Higgins

Happy Sunday!  Today I am sharing with you book two in The Sweet Trilogy.  Sweet Peril takes off where Sweet Evil left us.  This was a fantastic continuation of this series.  It dives us further into the world of Anna and the Nephilim.  The complications abound and so does the temptations.  For my full review keep reading after the book blurb.

15768191Book Blurb:

Anna Whitt, the daughter of a guardian angel and a demon, promised herself she’d never do the work of her father—polluting souls. She’d been naive to make such a vow. She’d been naive about a lot of things.

Haunted by demon whisperers, Anna does whatever she can to survive, even if it means embracing her dark side and earning an unwanted reputation as her school’s party girl. Her life has never looked more bleak. And all the while there’s Kaidan Rowe, son of the Duke of Lust, plaguing her heart and mind.

When an unexpected lost message from the angels surfaces, Anna finds herself traveling the globe with Kopano, son of Wrath, in an attempt to gain support of fellow Nephilim and give them hope for the first time. It soon becomes clear that whatever freedoms Anna and the rest of the Neph are hoping to win will not be gained without a fight. Until then, Anna and Kaidan must put aside the issues between them, overcome the steamiest of temptations yet, and face the ultimate question: is loving someone worth risking their life?

Now that Anna has had to begin “working” for her father whenever necessary things have become complicated. She hasn’t heard anything from Kaiden since he moved and her heart still pines for him.  But, now that her father has an intricate plan for them to try to overthrow the Dukes she and her fellow Nephilim, Kopano must go out and recruit others willing to fight for their side when everything goes down.  As time goes on things become more complicated and dangerous.  Will the Nephilim be able to join together before they are discovered?  Can Anna decide what is really important to her, her heart or the lives of those around her?

I adored the continuation of Anna and Kaiden’s story.  The addition of the love triangle between Anna, Kaiden and Kopano really highlighted the deep feelings between all of three of them and an interesting new side to the quiet Kopano.  We also get to meet more Nephilim and see the depravity that drives the Dukes and their children apart.  This part of the trilogy really dives into the heart of Anna’s father’s plan for her and the Nephilim.  Though his plan at first may seem self serving it truly is something that is complex and dangerous.  It is that part that really adds a lot of depth to Anna’s character.  But, there are also times where you see how she is still naïve in many ways.  Overall, I would whole-heartedly recommend reading this series.  You won’t regret it.

Review: Sweet Evil (The Sweet Trilogy #1) by Wendy Higgins

Happy Friday!  Today I have a phenomenal book for you.  Sweet Evil by Wendy Higgins was another book on my TBR list that I finally got to.  This is a great Young Adult Paranormal.  I fell in love with the creative story and the characters.  This is definitely one you will want to get your hands on.  For my full review keep reading after the book blurb.

Embrace the Forbidden

What if there were teens whose lives literally depended on being bad influences?

This is the reality for sons and daughters of fallen angels.

Tenderhearted Southern girl Anna Whitt was born with the sixth sense to see and feel emotions of other people. She’s aware of a struggle within herself, an inexplicable pull toward danger, but Anna, the ultimate good girl, has always had the advantage of her angel side to balance the darkness within. It isn’t until she turns sixteen and meets the alluring Kaidan Rowe that she discovers her terrifying heritage and her willpower is put to the test. He’s the boy your daddy warned you about. If only someone had warned Anna.

Forced to face her destiny, will Anna embrace her halo or her horns?

Anna has always experienced things that others couldn’t.  She could see auras and most recently since her birthday she has been able to see clouds floating around people.  It isn’t until she meets a very hot drummer names Kaiden that things become a bit clearer.  It is only after their second meeting that Kaiden begins to reveal what they both are.  They are children of demons here on Earth.  Each of the children of demons have the affliction of the demon.  Such as, Kaiden is the son of the demon of Lust and he is charged with getting people to have lusty feeling and having sex, usually with him.  Anna, is the daughter of the Demon of Substance Abuse, and she is attracted to drugs and alcohol and must get people to use them.  The problem is that Anna has a conscience regarding this.  After finally meeting her father she learns that she is also part Guardian Angel.  With this knowledge, Anna must make a choice.  Will she follow the path toward darkness or stay in the light?  Its not as easy as it sounds since the demon world now knows about her.  She must keep the truth about her secret and her growing attraction to the Son of the Demon of Lust under wraps or she will get her and all she loves killed.

I adored this first book in the series.  Anna is truly a great character.  With her little bit of angel and demon it almost made her human.  I think everyone could relate on one level or another about the pull to do something bad and had remorse about it.  Kaiden was also a great character that brought a lot of depth to the story.  Also, who wouldn’t fall for the hot as sin drummer.  This is a teenage girl after all :).  The story itself was quite inventive and unique.  It really meshed the real world with that of angels and demons.  It truly felt like this could be real.  This book really set up the world and setting for this trilogy.  It let us meet characters that will be important in the future and allows the reader to bond with all of them.  Wendy Higgins is a gem of a writer and this is one series that I know will stay with me for a long time to come.

A Children of Angels Novel:
When Alexandria Grace Groaban was a child, she learned she was very different from other children and adults she encountered. She saw and heard things that no child should ever bear witness to. She knew details of things and people long since passed, and she could hear voices and repeat them in whatever language she heard during the scenes which played out before her young and impressionable eyes. Through an encounter with someone she thought to be her guardian angel, Alexandria was given a reprieve so that she might know some normalcy in her childhood. But at the age of twenty-one, Alexandria returned home to her family’s small estate outside Oxford, England for Christmas, and learned the hard way that her grace period was about to come to an abrupt and vicious end. Now, whether for better or worse, she will find herself on the edge of a great precipice. One that will call her into action and into a world that she could never have fathomed existed. For Alexandria to know who and what she truly is, she will have to rise to the challenge of a battle that has been waged for millennia by beings first spoken of in Genesis, and embrace that which has lay dormant within her since she was a child

Alexandria’s family has always known she was special.  She would be able to see the history of any object she touched.  This happened until her guardian angel Ganymede offers her a reprieve so she may have a normal childhood.  This reprieve is only temporary until a time in the future.  Alex’s reprieve ends when she is attacked at a ball.  It is only when Ganymede comes to her aid that things start to be revealed.  Alex learns that her soul is that of a Nephilim or a child of an angel.  Once she learns of what she is she want to learn more and leaves to go to a “retreat”  to recover from her attack.  It is at the “retreat”  that she really meets many Nephilim.  Most have known her when she was alive previously.  As she meets other Nephilim she also learns the powers she has and how to control them.  As she dives deeper into herself and into her powers she realizes she will need to make a decision to either stay mortal or choose an immortal life.  Though Alex knows she needs to make a choice soon but will she have enough time to decide or will her choice be made for her.

This was a great novel.  It was a clever and refreshing story.  Alex’s character was fantastic.  You actually saw her develop and change as the story went on.  It’s not just Alex that makes this story great.  I think the rest of the Nephilim with their unique abilities and personalities.  They are all fun and add an additional level.  Since they all knew Alex as Arianna they already care for her in ways that would take ages.  I think another level is the love triangle between Alex, Jackson and Gaius.  I definitely don’t envy Alex having to choose between these two men.  I did notice that this is a very religiously based story.  It’s not surprising since this is a story about angels but the story does focus on some specific scripture.  This aspect may turn off some readers who do not share certain beliefs.  I personally thought it was a new take on angels and their children.  Overall, I felt this was a good story with a lot of potential in the series to come.

Genre: YA Paranormal Romance

Format: eBook and Paperback

Length: Super Novel

eBook: 978-0-9856562-1-8

This was a great read!  Lisa Voisin really drew me in with this story.  The character’s and premise are phenomenal.  The idea that you could fall in love with an angel and they would fall from heaven to be with you is both sad and makes your heart thump.  Mia and Michael have been through this once before.  Now, they are meeting again after millenia have gone by.  The attraction is still there connecting their souls.  Michael has been given a second chance after falling, but must face Mia again to be let back into his heavenly brotherhood.  They must know he will choose God and Heaven over a woman.  All the while fighting their natural urges they must also fight the evils of Demons trying to attack Mia and her friends.  Along with being normal teenagers they must deal with a battle of epic proportions that only few can see.  Will Michael make the same choice or will Mia feel the pain of losing her angel again?

I loved this story.  The characters were well-developed and the story well thought out.  But, I am a sucker for a good love story that carries over time.  Thought Michael and Mia are teenagers I really felt they were much older than they seemed.  Lisa Voisin does a wonderful job illustrating the battle between Angels and Demons along with the battle between choosing love and lose.  Overall, a wonderful Young Adult read.  I would recommend this for anyone who loves a good love story, especially one with celestial challenges.
