Chapter 7

“You wanted to see me Mr. Boswacker?”  I walked into his office like I was going in front of a firing squad.

He wrinkled his nose at me remembering my embarrassing episode the day before.  “Yes, Ms. Bell, I need to talk to you about what happened yesterday.”

“I’m sorry sir.”

He waved his hand.  “Mr. Anderson wants to meet with you today.  You don’t need to apologize to me.  I feel he will express to you everything that I would like to say to you.”

My stomach dropped.  “I understand.  When does he want to meet with me?”

“How am I supposed to know? I’m not a secretary.  You will be called up sometime today.  I wanted to be the one to tell you.”  His words came with a sneer.

What a dick!

“Thank you, sir.”

“Please shut the door behind you, Ms. Bell.”  He dismissed me.

With a nod I left Mr. Boswacker’s office.  I felt numb and for once in the last twenty-four hours it wasn’t because of the three tests I’d passed.  Lost in thought, I walked back to my office on autopilot.  A strong hand stopped me.

“What did Ballslapper want?”  Daniel asked.

I let out a laugh at his nickname for my boss.  “Just to tell or warn me I was going to be summoned to Anderson’s office.”  I looked at Daniel.  “I’m fucked.”

“You don’t know that.  Mr. Anderson is way more chill than you think.”  He stepped back and stared at me.  “Are you feeling better?”

I blushed then whispered.  “Come into my office.  I have to tell you something.”

Daniel furrowed his brow but followed me into my office anyway.  I motioned for him to close the door then sat behind my desk.

After shutting the door, he asked, “What is with all the cloak and dagger stuff?”

“I’m pregnant.”  I whisper yelled.

Daniel blinked then fell into one of the chairs in front of my desk.  “Are you sure?”

“Yes.  I took three tests.  The one time I wanted to fail a test and I passed with flying colors on all three counts.”

“Holy shit.”  He breathed.

“Do you know who the father is?”

I blanched.  “Of course, I do.  What do you think I do?  Go out and sleep with so many people I wouldn’t know whose baby it is?”

Daniel held his hands up in front of him.  “I’m sorry.  So, who is it?”

“It was a guy I met at Rufus’ wedding.”

“I didn’t know you hooked up with anyone at the wedding.  Does Rufus know?”

“First, I didn’t tell anyone because honestly it wasn’t the best night of my life.  He was a bit overly excited and things ended quickly.  Then we got pretty drunk and I can’t even remember if we did it more than that one time.  Second, no Rufus doesn’t know.  I can barely wrap my own mind around it let alone share the news with him.”

“Wait a minute, are you telling me the baby daddy was a one pump chump?”

“Yep.  Also, I think he talks to his penis.  That could have been my imagination, but I could have sworn it at the time.”

“Geez, Rhapsody.  You know how to pick ‘em.”

I let out a laugh with no humor.  “Yeah.”

“Are you going to tell him?”

“I don’t even know how get ahold of the guy.  I woke up the next day with an empty bed.”

“He ghosted you?”

“I guess.  Seems he was as impressed with me as I was with him.”

“Well, I’m sure you could ask Rufus for his info.”

“I can see how that conversation would go.  ‘Hey, Rufus.  Do you remember that hot guy that you sat with me at the loser table?  Oh yeah that guy.  Well, he sorta knocked me up.  Do you have his digits so I can tell him?’  Yeah.  That would go over great.”

“You have to figure something out.  Maybe you can find him on facebook.”

“Another great idea.  I will just tag the guy under life event of baby daddy.”

“Come on, Rhapsody.  I’m trying to help.”

I put my now pounding head on my desk.  “I know, Daniel.  I’m sorry.  I will figure something out.”

Daniel rubbed my head with his big hand.  “I am here for you.  If you need anything, even if it is beating the crap out of the baby daddy, just give me a call.”

Before I could answer my office, phone rang.  I put one finger over my lips signaling him to be quiet.

“Rhapsody Bell.”

“Hello Ms. Bell.  This is Sandra in Mr. Anderson’s office.  He’d like to meet with you today at 3pm.  Are you available?”

I took a quick look at my planner.  “Yes, I am available.”

“Fantastic.  He will see you then.  Have a good day, Ms. Bell.”

“Thank you.”

Daniel looked at me while I still held the phone.  “That didn’t sound bad.”

“I don’t think it is.  Maybe I’m wrong and I will get upset then throw up in Mr. Anderson’s office this time. “

Daniel laughed.  “If only.  Well, I see your cell is going crazy too so I will let you handle that and freak yourself out over your upcoming meeting with the bigwig.”

I threw a stuffed beaver I had on my desk at him as he left.  It hit the door then fell to the floor.  Picking up my phone, nausea built in my stomach.

Mom:  Hello, little beaver.

Dear Jesus give me the strength to deal with this woman.

Me:  Mom I’ve asked you not to call me that.

Mom:  What?  It’s cute.

Me:  What do you want mom?  I’m kinda dealing with things here.

Mom:  I need you.  Can we meet for dinner?

Me:  I don’t know what time I will be done work today.

Mom:  Come on, little beaver.  I have something important I need to talk to you about.

Me:  Fine.

Mom:  Great.  I will see you at my favorite place.

Me:  Ok.

I threw my phone into my purse.  The last thing I wanted to do was have dinner with my mother.  Cassie warned me she’d be in contact, but I thought I’d have a few days to come up with fake plans.  I thudded my head against my desk.  The only good thing about my mother was she was so self-centered she’d never realize I have things going on in my life.
