This story takes place in a city called Paradise. The Minister of the Interior changed the name from Adelaide insisting all citizens would be happier and more hopeful in Paradise. He erected billboards around the city promoting and reminding everyone of how much better off they now were. Ruby is a beautiful young woman in her early twenties who wants to be hopeful. She lives alone with a spider in her stomach and hopes to start a new career as a car salesperson. Peter is a young architect in Paradise. He has loved two women in his life so far, and lost both of them – how many chances for happiness do you get? Madeline has found rapture in her life, but of course, it comes at a cost. When Ruby and Peter were nine years old, they witnessed a schoolmate crushed by a car on the Great Southern Road. Madeline was there and tried to shield her Peter, her son, from the grotesque event and she tried to help Ruby but she couldn’t. Hawkey was meant to be looking after his sister that day and if he had, she might not have been killed. Tommy drove the car that ran over the girl, this made Tommy a killer and at the mercy of the lethal disinterest of life’s coincidences and synchronicities. Doctor Reynolds, a somewhat renowned psychologist wrestles with his own dark story. He examines all of these people and documents their life stories for his book. He does a lot of good, but not for everyone. Doing Life in Paradise discusses hope, coincidence, synchronicity and the absurdity of life in a city that calls itself Paradise.
