About NOWHERE BUT HERE:

An unforgettable new series from acclaimed author Katie McGarry about taking risks, opening your heart and ending up in a place you never imagined possible

Seventeen-year-old Emily likes her life the way it is: doting parents, good friends, good school in a safe neighborhood. Sure, she’s curious about her biological father—the one who chose life in a motorcycle club, the Reign of Terror, over being a parent—but that doesn’t mean she wants to be a part of his world. But when a reluctant visit turns to an extended summer vacation among relatives she never knew she had, one thing becomes clear: nothing is what it seems. Not the club, not her secret-keeping father and not Oz, a guy with suck-me-in blue eyes who can help her understand them both.

Oz wants one thing: to join the Reign of Terror. They’re the good guys. They protect people. They’re…family. And while Emily—the gorgeous and sheltered daughter of the club’s most respected member—is in town, he’s gonna prove it to her. So when her father asks him to keep her safe from a rival club with a score to settle, Oz knows it’s his shot at his dream. What he doesn’t count on is that Emily just might turn that dream upside down.

No one wants them to be together. But sometimes the right person is the one you least expect, and the road you fear the most is the one that leads you home.

NOWHERE BUT HERE Excerpt:

From Emily’s Point of View. Set up: Emily is riding a motorcycle for the very first time and she’s riding it with Oz.

THE MOTORCYCLE ACCELERATES AND THE FEW inches I had established between me and Oz: gone. My body slides forward, colliding into his, and we click together like two puzzle pieces. Heat rushes up my neck and onto my cheeks. My thighs are too close to his, too tight against his body and this is way more intimate than I have been before with a guy.

Even when the two of us kissed.

Oz veers left, away from Olivia’s, away from the main road, and the entire motorcycle pitches to the side. My heart thunders and my fingers clutch not only at Oz’s belt loop, but at the material of his jeans, and his hips.

Oz glances at me over his shoulder as the bike straightens out. “Lean with it, Emily.”

Right. Lean with Oz and the bike. Got it. The narrow road curves ahead and this time when Oz and the bike tilt, I move along with it. Oz releases one of the amazingly high handlebars and massages my knee before returning his hand to the grip. Whether in reassurance or to affirm I mastered the curve I don’t know, but either way, I sit higher.

The wind whips through my hair and onto my face and I shut my eyes for a brief second and pretend that I’m flying. There’s something energizing, something hypnotic, something inside me that begs to burst out of a cage in search of freedom.

The motorcycle kicks forward and our speed increases. Beams of sunlight filter through the towering trees and green foliage blurs together as we fly over the road. From head to toe, my body vibrates with the loud growling of the powerful machine.

My knee still tingles from where Oz laid his fingers on me and I’ve never been more aware of my hands in my life. I should let go of Oz’s body, but I can’t. Belt loops weren’t enough and my fingers have somehow edged up and onto his sides. Oz is solid. Yes, definitely solid. Every inch of him that I touch is tight muscle.

Oz is a year older than me, but somehow he seems older, wiser and hotter than any other guy I’ve known. Just the way he rides his bike creates this overabundance of confidence.

Warm sensations I’ve never experienced before blossom through me. We enter another curve and I lean with him. I like how in sync I’ve become with Oz and the motorcycle. Like we’ve merged into one.

The purr of the engine deepens and Oz eases the bike to a stop. His feet hit the ground and he turns the machine off. It’s as if all sound in the world ceased, or maybe I’ve gone deaf because there’s no way anything can be this still or silent.

The wind picks up and the silence is frightened away with the roar of the trees bending. Both Oz and I shift with the flow of air and Oz doesn’t move the bike until the breeze gentles.

Oz kicks down the stand and the bike tilts, but not too much. He sets a hand over the fingers that I laced together across his stomach. Oh, hell, I’m plastic wrapped to him. I drop my head onto his shoulder and it places me closer, and closer is not what I need.

I go to unglue myself, but Oz squeezes my fingers, sending a jolt of electricity up my arms. “You okay?”

I have to clear my throat to speak and that just sucks. “Yes.”

Oz slides his fingers against mine and a fluttering occurs in my stomach. It’s a light fluttering. Ticklish even, and my survival instincts scream at me to get off this motorcycle.

ABOUT 21 STOLEN KISSES:

When I first met him I resisted.
Like any forbidden love, I told myself he was a crush, and it would pass.
That was a lie. It never faded.

And I never expected he would fall for me just as hard.

There were so many reasons that should have kept us apart, least of all, the decade that separated us.
Growing up in New York City, I learned early on that love is a double-edged sword.
Love broke up my parents, love took away my friends, and love — the big, intense, never-been-like-this-beforelove — landed me in therapy.
Now I’m heading to college, and it’s time to give love a clean slate again. But, can I really start over when he’s still in my life?
Because the one man I’ve always wanted, is also the only guy I absolutely can’t have…
And he wants me just as fiercely.

Can I settle for anything less than the love of my life?

Review:

Kennedy is the daughter of a very popular TV show writer.  She is also the daughter of a woman who shows that love is exchangeable.  Kennedy doesn’t want that.  She only wants the love of her life.  Unfortunately, that love of her life is the twenty-something Noah.  Noah also happens to be her mother’s agent.  To complicate matters they must pretend and lie which is exactly what neither wants to do.  Though their love affair is made up entirely of stolen kisses they know that nothing can go forward until she is 18.  But, will they last long enough to see if they are just made up of stolen kisses or will they find out that there is more to them then their love.

Noah and Kennedy were such a great pair of characters.  You can’t help yourself but to fall for them.  As a reader you will go back and forth whether you are cheering them on or condemning what they are doing.  The complexity of Kennedy’s story was so deep that you really felt like you were reading about someone much other than her 17 years.  It’s in this that you really forget the age gap between them.  Their love pops off the page and will burrow its way into your heart.  It will make you feel all gooey and warm until its broken and unfortunately you feel that too.  Overall, it was a great book.  I loved every enthralling word that Lauren Blakely put on those pages.  I will definitely be picking up more of her books….as should you.

CAN’T HELP FALLING IN LOVE

by Bella Andre

Gabe Sullivan’s captain, Todd, stepped into the room.

“How’re you feeling, Gabe?”

“Good, Captain.”

He moved to sit up straighter on the bed and Todd shook his head. “You’re fine just like that. I know your skull must hurt like hell.” He nodded back to the doorway. “Are you ready to see Ms. Harris and her daughter, Summer?”

No, he thought, he’d be better off never seeing those eyes again.

He’d thought about Megan and her daughter one too many times for comfort. Not just because he was reviewing the rescue, trying to look for what he could have done differently, to have gotten them out faster and more safely—but because he hadn’t been able to forget her strength, how hard she’d fought to stay conscious, and what a fighter she’d been every single second of the harrowing journey from her burning apartment.

Still, he understood that fire victims often felt compelled to say thank you to the men who had saved them. Especially in a case like this, where they’d just barely held death at bay.

“Sure.” He began to nod, but a sharp shooting pain stopped him halfway into the movement.

Catching his grimace, Todd said, “I’ll ask Megan and her daughter to come back later.”

Her name fit her, Gabe had found himself thinking one too many times. Megan was pretty and strong all at the same time. It would be better to think of her as Ms. Harris. Although, he had to wonder, was there a husband? And if so, where had he been during the fire and why wasn’t he here with them now?

“No,” he said, “it’ll be better if I see them now.”

She’d say thank you, he’d tell her he was happy to see her and her daughter doing so well, and that would be that. No more being haunted by her eyes, by the surprising strength she’d shown him as she’d crawled on the floor of her apartment and down the stairs.

A couple of minutes later, Todd walked back in with the mother and daughter. Ignoring the pain in his head, Gabe sat up higher and forced a smile on his face.

And then, his eyes locked with Megan’s and his smile froze in place.

My God, he found himself thinking before he could shove the thought away, she’s beautiful.

The last time he’d seen her face it had been through a thick haze of dark smoke and the knowledge that one wrong move meant their lives were over. Her eyes were just as big and pretty, her limbs looked as lean and strong as they had when he’d been helping to move her along the floor, but now he could see the softness in her, the sweet curves of her breasts and hips in her T-shirt and jeans. He couldn’t stop staring at the startling green of her eyes, the silky dark hair falling across her shoulders, and the way her pretty young daughter was a carbon copy of her, the only difference their hair color, one dark, one light.

She seemed just as stunned as he and for a long moment, the two of them just stared at each other in silence until her daughter ran over to him and threw her arms around him.

LOVE, TUSSLES, AND TAKEDOWNS

BY VIOLET DUKE

She felt his eyes on her before she saw him.

Her body recognized the intensity of that stare as if it were hardwired to her directly.

The guys were all but forgotten now. Hell, the whole room faded away like white noise as she watched Hudson climb into the ring.

Lia enjoyed watching him move. There was nothing hurried about his motions; he always seemed relaxed and confident, efficient and ready. He wasn’t intimidating in that built-like-a-fridge way her friends who’d played football in college were. Rather, he was leaner. But infinitely harder. More etched out of wood than molded out of clay. As such, running into his chest was literally like running into a wall.

A hard, sexy wall lined with bricks.

“You’re killing me.” His voice simmered, soft and low, with a lazy smile curving his lips to show his words were more compliment than complaint. It took just one glance at the throbbing pulse in the muscular column of his neck for Lia to know he wasn’t nearly as unaffected as he sounded.

Then all analysis of the man scattered when he went and peeled his shirt up over his head, sending those granite-etched muscles of his back rippling and expanding. His eyes tangled with hers as he toed off his shoes and immediately, Lia felt a surge of adrenaline override any female reaction she’d normally have to the sight.

Because the man was doing something so much better than flirting.

He was inviting her to play.

No gloves. No strike pads.

With a slow grin, she snagged her teeth around the Velcro bindings on her MMA gloves and started stripping off the boxing tape underneath as well.

This was exactly the kind of sparring she’d been craving for weeks now.

Review: Ms. Conception by Jen Cumming

Today I am pleased to start your week off with a wonderful book, Ms. Conception by Jen Cumming.  This is a wonderful novel about the ups and downs of making a baby.  With great humor and honesty, Jen Cumming illustrates this struggle wonderfully.  For my full review keep reading after the book blurb.  I hope you all have a wonderful week ahead.

Ms Conception BT Banner Correct

Ms Conception_Jen Cumming_coverBook Blurb:

Abigail Nichols has tried everything from rash-inducing herbal creams to acupuncture in a desperate, last-ditch effort to get pregnant. Wedged into her iPhone schedule among new business pitches and rebranding design meetings is Abby’s ovulation cycle, along with potential opportunities for illicit afternoon quickies. With all of their hopes and savings on the table, Abby and her husband Jack enter the whispered world of fertility clinics.

Along with a meddling mother-in-law, competitive pregnancies, and constant obligatory sex, Abby’s baby-track mind conspires to ravage her career, her marriage, and her sanity. One thing she knows for sure: a healthy sense of humor (and the occasional glass of red wine) is the best coping strategy. One thing she wishes she knew: whether it will be enough.

Ms. Conception is an honest but light-hearted novel inspired by the ups and downs of fertility treatments and the emotional burden that rests on those trying to conceive.

Review:

Abby and Jack have tried for many years to have a baby.  It has gone on so long that she has begun to look at alternatives and fertility treatments.  She isn’t the only one who has been looking into treatments for her.  It seems like everyone from her mother and sister to her best friend.  When they finally decide to go forward with treatments the commentary from all around increases as negative test after negative test happens.  It seems everyone is able to get pregnant except her even her meddling mother in law shares more than one pointed comment.  But in the end the journey is rough but can be rewarding.  If Abby can juggle fertility treatments, her job, her husband and all the other obligations than children should be easy.

This was a highly enjoyable read.  It was definitely a challenge to put down when I had to get some sleep.  This really is a great novel for anyone who has had trouble conceiving.  It portrays it in a humorous, honest and intelligent manner.  This makes it seem like anyone who has been unlucky in natural conception is not alone.  Abby is a wonderful character that any woman can relate.  Her husband, Jack, is a husband that all men should hope to be.  Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a laugh with a great story.

Jen Cumming_author photoAuthor Bio:

Jen Cumming had two dreams: to be a mother and a writer. The first was much harder than she’d imagined, but it gave her plenty of material for her second dream. Now she’s realized both and traded drug cocktails and early morning line-ups at the fertility clinic for juice boxes and evening PTA meetings.

Jen’s latest dream is to live in a small village in France and eat croissants. Being allergic to wheat might hamper that dream, so in the meantime she does her best to balance life with two young children and run a business with her husband in Toronto. She loves to spend time at the cottage in the summer, ski in the winter, and travel whenever she can.

Review: Black Iris by Leah Raeder

Hello Everyone!!!  I hope you all are having an awesome weekend.  Today I am reviewing for you, Black Iris by Leah Raeder.  This was a pretty dark and emotionally charged book.  A story that anyone who has gone through high school has encountered one of the characters that is in this book.  Whether you can relate to the idea of revenge or not fitting in or being bullied this book will rip off the band-aid that is covering your old wounds and make you feel them all over again through these characters.  For my full review keep reading after the book blurb.

18829666Book Blurb:

It only took one moment of weakness for Laney Keating’s world to fall apart. One stupid gesture for a hopeless crush. Then the rumors began. Slut, they called her. Queer. Psycho. Mentally ill, messed up, so messed up even her own mother decided she wasn’t worth sticking around for.

If Laney could erase that whole year, she would. College is her chance to start with a clean slate.

She’s not looking for new friends, but they find her: charming, handsome Armin, the only guy patient enough to work through her thorny defenses—and fiery, filterless Blythe, the bad girl and partner in crime who has thorns of her own.

But Laney knows nothing good ever lasts. When a ghost from her past resurfaces—the bully who broke her down completely—she decides it’s time to live up to her own legend. And Armin and Blythe are going to help.

Which was the plan all along.

Because the rumors are true. Every single one. And Laney is going to show them just how true.

She’s going to show them all.

Review:

Laney has been called many things in her life.  Most of those things have been true but they don’t need to know that.  They need to know how they have hurt her and others.  They deserve to feel what they have caused others to feel.  Once Laney has her plan she needs to find accomplices.  Soon after going to a frat party she finds Armin and Blythe.  The two perfect partners for her future crimes.  As she gets closer to accomplishing her goals the closer she gets to destroying those she feels need to be destroyed.  But on her road to revenge she will have bumps she doesn’t account for.  It’s those bumps that validate what she is doing and what she needs to do.  She is not the hero of her story but the villain in many others.  She will get even and they won’t even see it coming.

This tale is definitely a dark one.  From page one Laney tells the reader she will not have redemption or be a hero.  She knows she is a villain but she feels validated by that.  Those who have hurt her she is out to get.  Out to repay them for the pain they caused her and her family.  This really is quite a twisted story.  Sadly though you can understand why she decides to do what she does.  You feel her pain through her actions.  Those actions aren’t usually against other people but against herself.  I think that is the most realistic emotion people will relate to in this book.  It isn’t just the emotions though that make the reader really take pause.  It is the depth and level of planning that Laney takes.  This book will keep you wondering where she is going and what she plans on doing.  Just when you think she is done, a big twist comes along and smacks the reader right across the face.  If you are looking for a book that will keep you guessing and put you through an emotional roller coaster you will love this book.

Review: Dances of the Heart by Andrea Downing

Happy Friday!  This Friday I am starting your weekend off with an awesome book, Dances of the Heart by Andrea Downing.  This is a modern-day cowboy romance.  When City meets Country can they find a middle and allow love to bloom.  It’s a great romance that will get your heart fluttering just in time for the weekend.  For my full review keep reading after the book blurb.  Have a great weekend and happy reading!

24824180Book Blurb:

Successful, workaholic author Carrie Bennett lives through her writing, but can’t succeed at writing a man into her life. Furthermore, her equally successful but cynical daughter, Paige, proves inconsolable after the death of her fiancé.

Hard-drinking rancher Ray Ryder can find humor in just about anything—except the loss of his oldest son. His younger son, Jake, recently returned from Iraq, now keeps a secret that could shatter his deceased brother’s good name.

On one sultry night in Texas, relationships blossom when the four meet, starting a series of events that move from the dancehalls of Hill Country to the beach parties of East Hampton, and from the penthouses of New York to the backstreets of a Mexican border town. But the hurts of the past are hard to leave behind, especially when old adversaries threaten the fragile ties that bind family to family…and lover to lover.

Review:

Carrie and her daughter are travelling to a ranch to research her mother’s upcoming book.  On their drive they come across a recently returned soldier in the rain walking along the highway.  Carrie convinces her daughter to pull over and pick up this lonely rain-soaked soldier.  What they don’t realize it this one action will change their lives and their hearts forever.  Carrie soon meets the soldier, Jake’s, dad and sparks soon fly even if it is reluctant.  But, it isn’t only Carrie and Jake’s dad that have sparks.  Jake and Carrie’s daughter, Paige, find themselves in a reluctant love affair even if love isn’t on the menu.  But, with four very different people with four very different lives can they find a way to open their hearts to love or will they lose their last chance at love.

From page one I feel into this book.  I couldn’t put it down until I was at the end.  Even then I wanted more.  I adored Carrie and Ray’s love affair.  It was wonderful to see a novel that shows love can develop at any age and can and will find a way when a heart is open.  I did have hopes with Paige and Jake.  I think this was the only part I was a bit disappointed with.  There was no clarity as to what would happen to them.  Throughout the book the two couples had paralleled stories, but when it came to the end we don’t really know what or if anything happens with Paige and Jake. I hope this means there will be a follow-up story.  It really seemed like there was more to their story whether they ended up together or not.  Overall, this was another great book by Andrea Downing.  I truly can’t wait for another.

Updates, What’s going on and What’s to come…

Hi Everyone!  I haven’t done just a plain post in quite a while.  I know that unfortunately I have been a bit inconsistent with things lately.  I truly apologize to all of my readers and authors who have been so supportive these past few years.  It has been a very hectic and busy Winter/Spring.  Between work and personal obligations I haven’t been able to allot the time needed for my books and reviews.  For that I am truly sorry.

I take my job as a blogger of book reviews very seriously.  I will not review a book that I cannot give a positive review.  I may put some criticisms in a review but I will not shame or flat out be mean to an author.   Also, I will not review a book that I could not finish. I feel that is unfair to everyone.   It is with this that you will see that most of my reviews are 3 and 4 stars on Goodreads and Amazon.

I’m sure your wondering what my point is.  Well, I am getting there.  I have decided to take a small hiatus in reviewing books that are being requested of me.  Due to the abundance of requests I have had over the last two years I haven’t been able to do much reading just for my enjoyment.  This is not to say that I haven’t enjoyed the books I have reviewed.  I have found many new and fantastic authors.  Authors that have honored me by coming back to me for all of their books.  That is truly what makes this fun.  But, as anyone will tell you everyone has their TBR list and mine hasn’t been touched in a VERY long time.  I actually had a great opportunity to meet many of the authors on my TBR list and I felt a bit ashamed that I hadn’t read their stuff yet.  So, it is this small hiatus that I will be tackling some of those books/book series’ on my list.

You will still be hearing from me.  I plan on reviewing all of those books.  These will probably be more mainstream authors that many of you have read or plan on reading.  Starting in August I will be back to my requested reviews and discovering new indie authors and some you will from previous reviews.

I promise this is a small summer hiatus and before you know it I will be back to all my new and wonderful indie authors.

Thank you all for understanding and please feel free to still contact me about books you find interesting, would like me to review or just want to share.  I just can’t guarantee I will get to them til fall.

August and Maeve knew each other since they were both small and life was simpler.  Unfortunately, many years later they are reunited when he is now the Lord and Maeve is still only a tenant on his land.  When Maeve goes to him to negotiate terms of payment August devises another plan.  He knows he wants her and must have her but his title and her station prevent that so he plans to use this to love her the only way he can.  This began as just a ruse to get a few kisses and be done but they both don’t plan for what their hearts have in store.  Can August and Maeve overcome the world they live in or will their love slip through their fingers?

I will be honest this was a difficult book to begin.  I felt it had a slow start and a bit confusing as to where it was going.  That being said I ended up falling for this book.  The love story has a bit of a Romeo and Juliet kinda feel.  Though it spans many years, Killian McRae does a fantastic job pulling it all together.  You will become entrenched with the lives of Maeve and August.  These two characters are so different but made for each other.  When the trials that test their love come crashing down it is their character that helps to bind them.  The vivid landscape of Ireland and then eventually America helps to paint the world that they lived in and that unto itself lends the reader to understand the motivations behind the characters.  Overall, this is a great historical romance that I would recommend to anyone…even those who are not fans of historical romance.  I can’t wait to read another by Killian McRae.

He calls himself the Gentleman Mentor.

Just reading his ad makes me feel more alive than I have in years.

He promises to teach me the art of seduction … and show me the most sinfully erotic pleasures. He’s going to help me become the kind of confident, sexy woman men can’t ignore.

Six lessons … with the most gorgeous man … who happens to be a Dom.

The only problem … now that I’ve experienced his brand of delectable domination will anyone else ever compare?

She’s a client. That’s all.

Or it should be.

But with every lesson, she’s becoming more.

The secrets I’m hiding behind the image of the Gentleman Mentor make telling her the truth—and having anything real—impossible.

I’m training her for another man, and that fact guts me every time I think of it.

I know she’s not mine … but part of me won’t accept that.

Am I willing to risk it all to keep her?

THE GENTLEMAN MENTOR is a full-length standalone novel.

Once I’m completely nude, I kneel in the center of the room with my gaze trained on the floor and wait. My heartbeat is crashing against my ribs, and I’m filled with a strange sense of longing and anticipation. Sex is never like this. It’s always been in a bed, under the covers, without any dirty talk or forceful commands. Simple and straightforward. I know sex with my Dom is going to be anything but ordinary. And that’s way more exciting than it should be.

As I kneel in my darkened bedroom, naked and wet between my legs, the noise in my brain begins to quiet. I’m singularly focused on him. My gaze never strays from its focus on the floor near the door, on the swath of light that comes from the hall. My heartbeat grows heavy with anticipation.

I continue waiting in my spot and several minutes later, I hear him. Footsteps coming closer.

When he enters the room, he’s carrying some type of small black leather bag. My heart riots in my chest.

He calmly crosses the room, all but ignoring me, and sets the bag on my bed. I don’t know if I should watch, but I can’t help my eyes from following him. He removes his suit jacket and neatly folds it, placing it on the table beside my bed. He unzips the bag and removes a black strip of fabric, and then turns to face me.

“Those greedy little eyes want to see everything, to form an opinion on it all, yes?”

I don’t answer. My breathing grows shallow as I continue watching him.

“The only thing I want you focused on is sensation, feeling. Do you understand?”

“Yes.”

“I want to show you what you’re capable of. Do you trust me?”

“Yes,” I say again. I’m not sure why, but I do. And trust me, I’m aware it’s absolutely insane.

He stands behind me and fastens the silk fabric over my eyes, tying it behind my head. It blocks my vision entirely. My heart rate increases as the realization that I’m in total darkness sinks in.

I listen closely and hear him walk toward the bed. Then I hear a match spark to life, and my entire body stiffens. His footsteps cross the room, and I’m about to ask what’s going on when the faint scent of sandalwood and black currant greets me. He’s lit a candle, I’m pretty sure. Maybe this is all part of a ritual for him. Nothing is rushed, everything is calculated and planned out, and I like that he’s taken so much time and care into planning my lessons.
