Once again, she sweeps readers away with her spellbinding storytelling and the crafting of legend. Dana Michelle Burnett creates a reality of seductive witches, murder, revenge, and an ancient secret going back four centuries.

In a small Indiana town, alone in the dark, a man watches and waits…Waiting to see if the stories are true about The Soul of the Witch.

It begins with two girls, the very best of friends with an amazing psychic bond. As children they were lonely outsiders, but now as adults, Devan and Janesa’s powers are growing stronger and more difficult to control. When a mysterious stranger comes to town offering to tell them a dark and magical secret about their past, they are thrown into an old battle they didn’t start, but one that threatens to claim their very lives.

Jealousy and suspicion threaten their lifelong bond as they set out to solve the mystery of their past and their budding supernatural powers. The novel moves from past to present from the small town of New Albany, to nineteenth century England, to the witch hunts in Ireland, and back again. A complex tale of seduction and evil unfolds–starting on a fateful night in the sixteenth century because of a forbidden love and a curse . . . A curse meant to punish and torment throughout the following centuries.

Can they trust this stranger? Can they trust themselves as the dark secrets they learn threaten to tear them apart? Will the curse at last claim The Soul of the Witch?

Review:

Janesa and Devan have always had an otherworldly connection.  Best friends that have never really fit with those around them.  They have always been able to attract any many they wanted and used this to get through life.  That is until Nick comes into town.  Unbeknownst to Devan and Janesa, Nick has been watching them.  Soon Nick gets closer than he is supposed to and is drawn to Devan.  Through Nick Devan learns who Nick is, who he works for and what she and Janesa are.  Through letters that take you into the past through generations of Devan and Janesa’s ancestors you see that they aren’t as unusual as they may think.  They are just the first two to have found each other.  But with this information they will have to protect themselves from the one person who has tried to annihilate their ancestors.  The only way to do this will be to accept who they are and what they have to do.

I was really drawn into this book.  I liked the story and I liked the characters.  Devan and Janesa were quite interesting in the beginning.  With the mystery that surrounded them it really propelled the story.  I think the best part of this story was the incorporation of the letters.  The letters from the witch hunters that were very detailed and showed quite a lot about the people who were made to hunt the supposed witches.  The only puzzling part was the letters where they confessed about their failings knowing they would be killed.  Though that seemed a bit confusing it helped propel the story in new and interesting angles.  Overall, I thought this was a fantastic story that I hope will be continued with future books.  I would say this is the perfect Halloween book.
