Recap and Giveaway: Indies Invade Philly Author Signing

This past Saturday totally rocked when I went to the Indies Invade Philly author signing.  40 plus authors were there signing yours and offering for you to purchase their books.  I had a couple of fangirl moments and yes I am a total nerd when it comes to that.  I was also lucky enough to have a lot of the authors give me swag to offer to you guys.  So, at the end be sure to look at the rafflecopter link and enter for your chance at lots of swag both signed and unsigned.

Fangirl Moments:

Michelle A. Valentine author of the Black Falcon Series

Ok…so I am gonna give you little snippets with some pics for your entertainment.  First, I got to meet Michelle A. Valentine.  She was totally awesome.  Also, she signed all of her books for me which consisted of a total of 5.  This didn’t please a few of the other fellow fans but cest la vie.  You only get to meet most of these authors once and I was definitely not going to lose out on my opportunity.  🙂

The very awesome, Tara Sivec

The very awesome, Tara Sivec

Second, I made a bee line over to Tara Sivec.  Now, this was my biggest fangirl moment.  I love this chick!  This is one of the most awesome people I have met and totally want to be her when I grow up.  Not only was she one of the most approachable authors I have ever met she was constantly interrupted by her “asshole” whistle because most people wanted to know why she wasn’t having her vibrator races.  I could have just hung out with her the whole time.  If you ever get the chance to meet Tara Sivec I guarantee you it will be a time you’ll never forget.

Third, I got to meet the very sweet Emma Chase.  She was one of the most humble people I met.  She really came across as very genuinely shocked by her popularity.  It was a real pleasure talking with her and hearing about her inspiration for Drew and his boys.

Eye Candy:

A couple of the authors brought their cover models.  Of course being the healthy woman I am I had to stop by and meet both the author and the cover model.  Now, some of the fans took it a bit far and I saw one too many women pawing at these poor guys.  Oh believe me I wanted to but by the time I got to see them I kinda felt bad they were being so “woman-handled”.  🙂

T.H Snyder and Joey Skundrich

T.H Snyder and Joey Skundrich

T.H Snyder who is an author who keeps popping up on my TBR list.  She is the author of the Cursed series.  Believe me when I say you will know you have seen these books just by the cover models…whoa baby!  The only book currently out is Cursed Love which I will be getting to in the very near future.  T.H Snyder brought the cover model for her third book in this series, Cursed Fate. The very sexy cover model was Joey Skundrich.

M.R Joseph and Reuben Ordonza

M.R Joseph is the other author who brought along her cover model.  She is another one who has been popping up on my TBR list.  She is the author of the Sandy Cove and Reunion Series’.  Her cover model was Reuben Ordonza.

TBR and New Authors:

Not only did I have some great fangirl moments and some wonderful eye candy, I also got to see and meet some really great authors I’ve been wanting to read.

Toni Aleo and I posing!

Toni Aleo and I posing!

Toni Aleo writes the Assassins series.  This has been one I’ve been wanting to read since I’ve done a cover reveal for her before.  She was a lot of fun to talk to and I got a chance to learn more about her books.  Of course I had to buy one and it is one that I will be reading pretty soon.

The very fun Carey Heywood and I.

The very fun Carey Heywood and I.

I also met Carey Heywood.  She and I talked for quite a while.  We shared a lot of fun stories about our kids and her books.  She is another author who has been popping up on my TBR list.  Well now, I guess there is absolutely no excuse since I got her book, Him.

R.E Hunter

R.E Hunter

R.E Hunter I came across when I was browsing for another interesting new author.  She was very sweet and she took me back by actually knowing my blog.  I am not ashamed to say that she made my day by just saying that :).  Her book Undone has now popped up on my TBR list and I will be picking it up in the near future (summer time).

It was a wonderful experience meeting all the authors I mentioned and even more (Amanda Maxlyn, Laura Kaye, Laurelin Page and Nikki Worrell to name a few) .  I feel like I need to start a support group for addicts like myself who are addicted to autographed books and meeting really awesome authors.   I would totally recommend going to a signing if you haven’t done so before.  So, since I grabbed so much swag its only fair to share the wealth.  I am going to giveaway 5 swag bags from authors at the Indies Invade Philly signing.  All you have to do is go here:

Good luck to you all and I will share one last pic with you…here is Tara Sivec flipping the bird to another author who is trying to photobomb her pic.

GENNA LYNDSEY is not a people person. A short, too-skinny, wild-haired waif, with crazy hair and sturdy nerdy glasses, lives through books. So it’s lucky she and her best friend own their own bookstore. Her college days taught her that dating was too unreliable to depend on others. It was then that she started resorting to obscure quotes to shield herself from others who ventured too close.

RICK JOHNSON, Fraud Insurance Claims Investigator, is assigned to look into an unusual number of claims filed by Genna Lyndsey. He suspects Genna of sabotaging her own property for the insurance money. His investigation uncovers an adorable introvert determined to keep everyone at bay, while someone else resolves to put her out of business—no matter how great the risk.

Genna is soully focused on making her business successful and growing it.  The big problem is that her building keeps having to be repaired.  Genna must file reports with her insurance company but when Rick Johnson investigates the numerous claims he begins to wonder about the store and its owner.  When Rick meets the unusual Genna he is taken aback.  She is skinny, wild haired and using quotes in every day conversation as though most people understand her.  The more Rick investigates Genna and her business the more he wants to be around her.  He finds himself drawn toward Genna, but Genna is fighting the attraction.  While Genna is fighting off Rick she also has an overly zealous patron and ex-boyfriend dogging her heels.  With Genna’s now expanding line of admirers, her businesses needs and the possibility someone is sabotaging her she doesn’t know which way to turn but she’s starting to think that no amount of quotes can hide her from the love that is looking for her.

I really liked this book.  It was a fun read with a quirky twist.  Genna and Rick were fun.  I enjoyed seeing their characters change.  Though I could see how Genna’s quotes could get tiresome but Rick eventually finds a way to at least halt them temporarily.  The bit of suspense/mystery was a nice additive even if it was quite predictable.  I think the use of the mystery was used more of a means to an end with Genna and Rick being forced into more situations together.  It isn’t just Genna and Rick in this story though.  Their best friends who also make a love connection are a great part of this quirky story.  Overall, I think it’s a great story and you will definitely love this odd couple love story.

Fresh Face Friday: Patriot’s Heart by Penelope Marzec

She’ll risk everything to save him…

Agnes, a blacksmith, runs the forge while her father fights in the Continental Army. The morning after the Battle of Monmouth, she discovers a wounded British soldier in her barn. Despite the risk, she vows to heal him as she believes a good Samaritan should.

Edwin, third son of the Duke of Dalfour, was supposed to become a barrister. He opted to run away and join the army. Shot on a mission to deliver the general’s message, he wakes in Agnes’s barn unaware of how he got there and missing his horse. If he is caught, he could be hung, but Loyalists are also searching for British deserters. If anyone discovers he is the son of the Duke, he is doomed.

Agnes tells everyone Edwin is her mother’s cousin, but she soon finds herself falling in love with him. When Loyalists kidnap her sister, Edwin vows to bring the child back from the British held camp. Can Agnes trust him? Or is he using her sister as an excuse to return to his company? Will Agnes ever see her sister again? And will Edwin break her heart?

Agnes has taken over for her father as blacksmith while he is fighting in the Continental Army.  One day before heading to the forge she heads to the barn to feed what animals weren’t taken by the British. When she enters the barn she soon finds a wounded British soldier.  Knowing that it is both the right thing to do and hoping someone would help her father if he were injured, Agnes sets it upon herself to heal the soldier.  When Edwin wakes in the barn to an angel trying to heal him he is taken back but that is short-lived and he blacks out.  Coming to again he begins to realize that he is being helped by one of the rebels and immediately tries to figure out how to get back to the British Army.  While Edwin heals he grows closer to Agnes and her family.  He finds himself drawn to the unusual patriot.  When tragedy hits Agnes and her family on multiple fronts she leans on Edwin and the thought of him finally going back to the British breaks her heart.  In the end,  will Edwin choose his patriot or go back to the life that he left in England?

This was a wonderfully sweet historical novel.  It is centered on the tumultuous time in America’s history.   Within this time period is a story that takes the stigmas away from both the British and the American patriots and places them as people who have to overcome the issues that come along with war.  That being said, Edwin and Agnes were great characters.  I really enjoy strong female characters and Agnes is definitely a women strong enough to survive her time.  Edwin is the one you see the most development in.  He is a bit immature to begin with and then over time grows to be the man who is perfect for Agnes.  I think this story with its content, character and purity with the Christian element added in is a good romance for any age.  It will transport you to the birth of America and let you take part as if you were right there with them.  Overall, this is a great book and an enjoyable read.

Review: Tangled by Emma Chase

Happy Tuesday!  My review today is one that I’m excited to post.  I really loved this book and I will be lucky enough to meet Emma Chase on Saturday.  Her book, Tangled, was witty, fresh and unique in its narrator.  I know you will love this book the moment you open the book.  As always keep reading after the book blurb for my full review.   I hope you all have had a great beginning to your week.

Drew Evans is a winner. Handsome and arrogant, he makes multimillion dollar business deals and seduces New York’s most beautiful women with just a smile. He has loyal friends and an indulgent family. So why has he been shuttered in his apartment for seven days, miserable and depressed?

He’ll tell you he has the flu.

But we all know that’s not really true.

Katherine Brooks is brilliant, beautiful and ambitious. She refuses to let anything – or anyone – derail her path to success. When Kate is hired as the new associate at Drew’s father’s investment banking firm, every aspect of the dashing playboy’s life is thrown into a tailspin. The professional competition she brings is unnerving, his attraction to her is distracting, his failure to entice her into his bed is exasperating.

Then, just when Drew is on the cusp of having everything he wants, his overblown confidence threatens to ruin it all. Will he be able untangle his feelings of lust and tenderness, frustration and fulfillment? Will he rise to the most important challenge of his life?

Can Drew Evans win at love?

Tangled is not your mother’s romance novel. It is an outrageous, passionate, witty narrative about a man who knows a lot about women…just not as much as he thinks he knows. As he tells his story, Drew learns the one thing he never wanted in life, is the only thing he can’t live without

We meet Drew when he is home sick with the flu.  Well, that’s at least what he says at first.  But, Drew begins to tell us a very different story.  It all begins with his usual trolling for women at bars.  When he encounters this beautiful girl he is entranced and feels this is his next lay.  Unfortunately for him she turns him down flat and he moves on to the next easy girl.  The next day as Drew is going over his previous nights escapades with his colleagues he meets the new associate his father hired, Katherine Brooks.  He is floored when he realizes this is the girl who turned him down the night before. Katherine and Drew are thrown together as both competitors and partners.  Unfortunately, that only fans the flames between them.  When they eventually come together the ending isn’t as happy as either would like it to be.  But, Drew refuses to sit back and get anything but the happy ending he deserves.  The question is if Katherine is willing to forgive his multitude of sins and let him have things his way.

I adored this book.  It was such a refreshing take on a romance novel.  With this story being told so very blatantly from the male lead’s perspective it was unique and fresh.  Drew is one character that won’t be leaving me anytime soon.  It takes quite a talent to write what the male psyche holds.  Most of us have no idea what is going on and with Drew he confirmed what we all know…all they think about is sex.  I think one of my favorite parts about this story was that Drew was very plain in his speech and very unapologetic.  That being said made the dialogue and his inner dialogue so hilarious.  Now that I have gushed about our hot male lead I can’t forget our heroine, Katherine.  The was a wonderful foil for Drew.  It was like they were opposite sides of the same coin.  She was definitely a strong female character that refused to just fall to Drew’s feet.  The story of these two is such an instant classic almost like a pairing out of a Jane Austen novel.  But, you wouldn’t ever find some of the things Drew says, describes or does in Pride and Prejudice or Emma.  Overall,  this is definitely one I will be recommending to all my friends and I can’t wait to pick up the next book with Katherine and Drew, Twisted.

Love, like life, is not without risk.

Veterinarian Vivian Dane has purchased her uncle’s practice in the tiny town of Wales, Missouri, where most residents still doubt her ability to treat their pets. But Viv is used to being considered less-worthy than her predecessors. After all, her parents are world-renowned wildlife vets, and most everyone is unimpressed she’s chosen to not follow directly in their footsteps. Now Connor, a patient’s owner, is hot for Viv, but clearly doesn’t think she’s dating material because he has a daughter…who he believes no woman is good enough for.

Being a perfect dad is EMT paramedic Connor’s life focus. He can’t seem to stay away from sexy Doctor Viv, but attraction is as far as he’ll ever let it go. His mother abandoned him, leaving him to be raised in the foster system, and then his wife abandoned both him and their daughter. He absolutely will not risk bringing another woman into his little girl’s life and having her feel the hurt of being left…again.

Forfeiting is easier than attempting and failing. So why does Viv feel compelled to prove she’s a sure bet for Connor and his daughter? Can Connor trust Viv–and himself–enough to play the possibilities?

Connor is the paramedic on a medevac helicopter.  When he is called to a horrible accident that included a cattle truck he meets the new vet Vivian.  Though when they meet they feel an instant connection they don’t know who each other is.  After their initial meeting they are each struck by the question of finding out who the other is.  Though Connor wants to know who the mystery woman from the accident is his dedication for his daughter is all-consuming.  So, when his daughter’s pet skunk needs a vet his mystery is solved and his problems only begin.  Connor fights his attraction to Viv and Viv feels the need to prove that she is perfect for him and his daughter.  It becomes an ongoing tug of war between Connor’s feelings for Viv and Connor’s dedication to his daughter.  Can Connor find a good balance or will a good woman slip through his fingers?

This was a sweet love story.  I really liked Connor and Viv.  I thought they were very likable.  My favorite had to be Janna, Connor’s daughter.  She was so fun and loveable.  Though I really enjoyed the love story I got a bit frustrated with Connor’s constant negative reactions about anything that Viv would say.  He was overly sensitive for most of the book.  I also thought that it was a good move in adding in Viv’s parents and her relationship with them.  It really gave her depth and an added intricacy.  Overall, I thought this was a good story even if Connor was a tad bit annoying at times.

Review: The Quintessential Gemini by Linn B. Halton

For twenty-one years, the focus of Katherine Dale’s life has been her work. Love interests and hobbies came and went, but what has always been there for her was her nine to five habit. Until she’s replaced. With her confidence dented, Katherine is angry at life and at herself. She’s ignored hints of “changes to come” in her horoscope forecasts, written by the wonderful and renowned astrologer, Mark Ainsley-Thomas. Mark is now an “A” list celebrity in the UK and his new Agent is determined to raise his profile in America, so he has to take on the new, but talented, astrologer James Kingman to help him run his web-site. Katherine lives her life according to her daily horoscope. When Katherine finds James has been writing her daily horoscopes rather than Mark, Katherine’s life explodes in confusion and, unexpectedly, love as the three lives become inextricably tangled. Now Katherine has to learn that the stars might be telling her that love is going to feature in her life, but when Katherine finds herself implicated in the headlines ‘Mystic Love Triangle Surprise’ she’s just as surprised as everyone else None of the men in her life are love interests – so what exactly does fate have in store

When Katherine Dale’s life is turned upside down by losing her job she immediately consults her horoscope to help give her an idea of what do.  It is at the same time that Mark Ainsley-Thomas, world renowned astrologer, takes on some help with the daily horoscopes due to his new intense schedule.  When James Kingman takes over the daily horoscopes for Mark he doesn’t realize that criticism that will come with it.  When Katherine notices her horoscopes start not making as much sense she decides to email Mark and soon discovers the reason her horoscopes are different is because now James is writing them.  What Katherine and James don’t realize at first is they have already met and didn’t really like each other.  As James and Katherine communicate they find they like each other.  While James and Katherine’s relationship is growing, Mark soon comes into Katherine’s life and with a meddlesome reporter twisting every little thing the three are thrust into a scandal that will reach across the sea into America.

I really enjoyed this book.  It was fun and very clever.  I thought it was very interesting bringing in the astrology portion of the story.  Personally, I enjoy astrology and found its presence in this book interesting.  The three characters were very well written.  I liked how each chapter had a characters point of view.  Katherine and James had a very naturally developed love story that just grew.  The addition of Mark was important for the story to move forward and his insight into both characters was great. Overall, I really enjoyed this unique story told in only a way Linn can do it.  This was definitely a breath of fresh air with many of the cookie cutter love stories out there.  I can’t wait to read what Linn comes out with next.
